Dictate to ChatGPT on Mac

ChatGPT has a microphone button of its own. Here's what happens to your recording when you use it, how that compares with dictating on your Mac, and the one shortcut clash worth knowing about.

By , who makes Precis · Updated

Short answer: ChatGPT's microphone button sends your recording to OpenAI to be transcribed, and keeps the audio while the chat stays in your history. Precis turns speech into text on your Mac and types it into ChatGPT laid out as a prompt, in the app or on chatgpt.com. Both use ⌥ Space by default, so give one of them another key.

How ChatGPT's own dictation works

Press the microphone icon in ChatGPT and talk. OpenAI's help page says the recording is sent to its models to be transcribed, and the text comes back for you to edit before you send it. The audio is kept for as long as the chat is in your history. If you delete the chat, OpenAI deletes the audio within 30 days, with exceptions for security and legal reasons.

If you've chosen to share audio to improve OpenAI's models, dictation audio may be used for training. To stop that, open ChatGPT's settings, then Data controls, and turn off "Include your audio recordings".

For a quick question it's hard to beat: nothing to install, and it's there wherever you use ChatGPT.

Where it falls short for long prompts

Dictating to ChatGPT with Precis

Click in ChatGPT's message box, hold your Precis key, talk, and let go. The words are turned into text on your Mac, then shaped as a prompt by Apple's on-device model and typed where your cursor is. You read it, then send it.

Precis knows it's ChatGPT from the app, or from the tab's title when you use chatgpt.com in Safari, Chrome or Arc, so you don't switch anything. Here's the built-in example of the Prompt style:

You say: "okay so i want you to write a swift function that groups dictation entries by day uh it should use the user's calendar not utc and the newest day should come first oh and don't use any third party libraries"

Precis types:
Write a Swift function that groups dictation entries by day.
- It should use the user's calendar, not UTC.
- The newest day should come first.
- Don't use any third-party libraries.

For a longer brief, start with "master prompt" and Precis lays it out as Role, Context, Task and Constraints. It's built not to add requirements you didn't say (how that's tested).

One thing to know: both use ⌥ Space

OpenAI's help page gives ⌥ Space as the shortcut for asking ChatGPT a question from anywhere, and ⌥ Space is one of the four keys Precis offers when you first open it. macOS lets two apps register the same keys and doesn't warn either of them, so one of them simply never hears the press.

If ChatGPT is running when you choose your key, Precis says so and suggests another. The easiest fix is to pick a different key in Precis: right Option, the Globe key, or any shortcut you like.

What still goes to OpenAI

Precis keeps your voice on your Mac. The text you send to ChatGPT goes to OpenAI like any message you type, so the privacy gain is the recording, not the prompt. If you need nothing at all to leave your Mac, the prompt can't go to a cloud chatbot either. Precis also works with Wi-Fi off, but ChatGPT doesn't.

Questions

Can I dictate to ChatGPT on Mac?

Yes. ChatGPT's message box has a microphone icon: your recording is sent to OpenAI to be transcribed, and the text comes back for you to edit. Apple Dictation and apps such as Precis can also type into ChatGPT.

Does ChatGPT keep my dictation audio?

OpenAI's help page says the audio is kept for as long as the chat is in your history, and deleted within 30 days of you deleting the chat, with exceptions for security and legal reasons. It may be used for training if you've chosen to share audio. You can turn that off in Data controls.

Why doesn't ⌥ Space work for dictation when ChatGPT is open?

ChatGPT uses ⌥ Space to open a quick question from anywhere, and macOS lets two apps take the same keys, so only one of them hears the press. Give your dictation app a different key, such as right Option or the Globe key.

Does Precis send my prompt to OpenAI?

Precis turns your speech into text and shapes it on your Mac. When you press send in ChatGPT, the text goes to OpenAI, as it would if you typed it.
